As we celebrate the autumnal equinox, what better way to reflect on the coming of fall but to warm up our bodies with some heart-strengthening hooping?! Tonight’s equinox marks a time of year when there are equal amounts of daylight and darkness. This kind of punctuated state of balance is one I frequently experience while hooping. We are the supporting axes around which the hoop spins, gracefully uniting our bodies’ two halves while keeping the ring rollin ’round. As we work to maintain this posture while moving inside the hoop, we can carry it’s metaphor into the coming months~ using our hooping practice to strengthen the invaluable life skill of balance outside the hoop. Happy hoopn’ autumn to you!

Hoopy Equinox!
Friday, September 22nd, 2006Virgin Festival- 9.23.06
Monday, September 18th, 2006This Saturday, yours truly will be go-go hoola-hooping at Baltimore’s upcoming Virgin Festival, a monster-size music fest at the Pimlico Race Course. For the $100 entrance fee, you get 10+ hours of stellar musical acts (think: Flaming Lips, Chili Peppers, the Who, Gnarls Barkley, Thievery Corporation, Scissor Sisters, RJD2, Brazilian Girls, VHS or Beta etc.), as well as a peek under the freaky big top that houses the ‘Thrilling Wonder Show’ where Trixie Little and the Evil Hate Monkey will be doing their thang along with a gang of other bedazzled performers, myself included. The Freak Lounge runs from 1-7pm, but the big bands start at noon and don’t stop until 10 pm, so come out early and relish all the rock star action and wild eye-candy in Maryland’s very own Charm City~
Open House Follow-up
Tuesday, September 12th, 2006We had a large and enthusiastic turnout of hoopers young and old this past Sunday at Glen Echo Park. Under the shade of the Cuddle Up, hoopers learned everything from basic spinning skills to challenging tricks that’d be sure to wow your friends. The open house took place as a promotion for fall classes beginning this week at the park. There’s still time to sign up for my new adult (minimum age 13) class taking place on Saturday mornings from 9:15-10:15. Classes will be held in the park’s Hall of Mirrors, and the six week session totals $72 (plus a one-time, $10 admin. fee for the park). Gather some friends and sign up now for this super fun & energizing way to start your weekend off right.
Produced in cooperation with the Glen Echo Park Partnership for arts & culture, the National Park Service, and Montgomery County, Maryland.
Takoma Park Fest
Friday, September 8th, 2006Before or after you stop by Sunday’s open house at Glen Echo Park (where I’ll be teaching a basic hoop class, see previous post for details), head on over to Takoma Park for their annual Folk Festival. There will be a ton of fun to be had, including: music, dance, children’s activities, food, craft show and sales, and a variety of community tables highlighting the goodness and diversity that is Takoma Park, MD. Events like this are wonderful opportunities for hoola hoopers to spread the whirling love throughout our local communities. This FREE festival will take place on Sunday, September 10th, from 11 am to 6:30 pm, rain or shine at the Takoma Park Middle School.
